New age technologies for the construction companies

Private companies and developers are continuously exploring the new materials and technologies that improve the quality and strength of the buildings as well as help them finish the work in a lesser period of time. New-age technologies like drywall systems, self-climbing formwork and concrete techniques have proven to have several advantages like cost effective, high earthquake resistance, minimal labour and low maintenance.

Techniques like aluminium shuttering were introduced in India several years ago. Though it did not gain enough acceptance earlier, its demand has increased a lot since then. It increases the overall cost of the construction budget but it also decreases the time period which allows the developers to start sales earlier than planned. Since the demand for timely delivery has become one of the main concerns, aluminium shuttering has turned out to be a saviour.

Another construction technology that is widely used is prefabricated or offsite construction. It can be described as the assembling of a variety of materials of a structure at the manufacturing site and then transporting it to the actual construction site to be assembled. Since it is produced in a controlled environment, it becomes easy to control the quality of the structure while also reducing the consumption of concrete, steel and labour by 20%, 30% and 50% respectively. Prefabricated construction is of two types, Pre-engineered buildings, when the structures are fabricated, brought to the site and assembled, and Pre-cast construction, when the structural materials are cast in concrete offsite, brought to the site and assembled.

The entry of international cloud-based service providers who do not want to build their data centres here is another reason for the demand. For example, we saw that Alibaba, a cloud-giant, set up its first data centre in in Mumbai in January, 2018 and will get more data centres around India by this year.

Apart from being costlier than other construction methods, finding skilled labour has become extremely difficult. The new technology is making the construction equipment very tough to operate, which is one with the main reasons why there is a shortage of skilled labour.

With the emphasis on timely completion of projects, it has become eminent to use new age technologies in this sector. Because of this, construction has seen a huge growth in the last decade and continues to grow. This will also affect and help in the growth of the country’s economy.
